Days earlier than anticipated, the Trump administration released the “White House Framework on Immigration Reform and Border Security.” It was discussed by Senior Advisor to the President, Stephen Miller, on a call this afternoon with Republican congressional staffers.

It outlines the administration’s legislative wish list around border security, a 10 to 12 year-path to citizenship for 1.8 million DACA-eligible immigrants, dramatic cuts to family reunification, and the elimination of the Diversity Visa.

The outline further proposes $25 billion for a “border wall system,” additional funds for the Department of Homeland Security and immigration court personnel, and would expand the use of an expedited deportation process to remove those who overstay their visas.

Many of the proposals contained in the one-page outline are vague but would likely have devastating consequences for many immigrants and asylum seekers. Some of the proposed changes could significantly expand immigration detention, strip protection for unaccompanied children, and make it much more difficult for those fleeing persecution to seek protection.

Although Miller called this “a compromise” that could get 60 votes in the Senate, legislation that makes such sweeping and draconian changes to our immigration system will be far more difficult to pass than they imagine.
