American Immigration Council Welcomes Akosua Meyers as Chief Development Officer
WASHINGTON, DC, September 3, 2024—The American Immigration Council announced today that Akosua Meyers will serve as the organization’s new Chief Development Officer. She brings over two decades of experience in leading fundraising and development efforts for social justice and research-focused organizations.
Prior to joining AIC, Akosua served as Director of Development at the Center for Law and Social Policy, a national anti-poverty policy advocacy organization that centers racial equity in its efforts. She also served as Deputy Director for Institutional Advancement for nearly a decade at Jobs With Justice, a national workers’ rights organization.
“This is a critical moment for policymakers and other audiences to recognize how immigrants strengthen the United States, and how the protection of immigrant rights helps lift up us all," said Meyers. “I can’t wait to get started in supporting this important work.”
“Growing the resources to sustain the Council’s work is critical in advancing our mission towards building a more fair and just immigration system," said Jeremy Robbins, executive director of the American Immigration Council. “With Akosua’s track record of success and her commitment to communities, we know she will help make our team stronger and ready to take on any challenge in the years ahead.”
Meyers’ commitment to resourcing the social and economic justice movement comes from her own lived experience as an immigrant in the U.S. and growing up in Africa. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Howard University and a master’s degree in public policy from George Mason School of Public Policy. Meyers is originally from Ghana.
About the American Immigration Council
The American Immigration Council works to strengthen America by shaping how America thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection and unleashes the energy and skills that immigrants bring. The Council brings together problem solvers and employs four coordinated approaches to advance change—litigation, research, legislative and administrative advocacy, and communications. In January 2022, the Council and New American Economy merged to combine a broad suite of advocacy tools to better expand and protect the rights of immigrants, more fully ensure immigrants’ ability to succeed economically, and help make the communities they settle in more welcoming.
